The graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an All India Examination conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore on behalf of the National Coordinating Board, GATE, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.
Attractive scholarships/assistantship for Post-graduate courses in Engineering / Technology / Architecture / Pharmacy at Engineering Colleges are open to those who qualify GATE.
For admission of students to post graduate programme in some engineering colleges/institutes, GATE is a mandatory qualification. Moreover GATE score is a requirement for admission to research programme in CSIR laboratories.
Eligibility : Those who eligible for GATE are:
I. Bachelor’s Degree Holders in Engineering / Technology / Architecture / Pharmacy and those who are in the final year of such programme.
II. Master’s Degree holders in any branch of Science / Mathematics / Statistics / Computer Applications & those who are in the final year of such programme.
III. Candidates in the second or higher year of the four year integrated Master’s Degree Programme (Post B.Sc.) in Engineering / Technology or in the third or higher year of a five year integrated Master’s Degree programme in Engineering / Technology.
IV. Candidates with qualifications obtained through an examination conducted by Professional societies recognized by the UPSC/AICTE as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech)
The GATE examination consists of a single paper of 3 hours duration that contains 65 questions carrying a maximum of 100 marks. The question paper will consist of both multiple choice questions (MCQ) and numerical answer type questions.
The examination for all the papers will be carried out in the ONLINE Computer Based Test (CBT) mode where the candidates will be shown the questions in a random sequence on a Computer screen. The candidates are required to either select the answer (for MCQ type) or enter the answer for numerical answer type question using a mouse on a virtual keyboard (keyboard of the computer will be disabled). Candidates will be provided with blank papers for rough work and these have to be returned back after the examination. At the end of the 3 hour window, the computer will automatically close the screen from further actions.
